Dürer’s Rhinoceros, 1515. At the time of this drawing, a live rhinoceros had not been seen in Europe since Roman times. Dürer based his drawing on descriptions of the animal and a rough sketch from an unknown artist. A live specimen finally arrived in Portugal in 1577, 62 years after Dürer completed his drawing and woodcut.
